After a long slog on the open market, Katy Perry’s “spare” Los Angeles home has sold for $7.5 million, a scant $25,000 over what she paid for the place in 2018. Back then, Perry reportedly bought the house to use as a guest cottage for friends and family, as it sits in the same guarded enclave as her former main residence, an $18 million estate on several acres.
But since 2018, Perry’s situation has changed. The international pop superstar is now engaged to Orlando Bloom, and recently gave birth to their first child together. She’s also moved out of L.A., and now primarily resides up in Montecito, just down the road from her Santa Barbara hometown, in a lavish estate she bought for $14.2 million last year. So it naturally follows the the Beverly Hills guest cottage, while an interesting addition to her portfolio, is no longer really needed.
Records now indicate the buyers are John and Rachel Valentino, he the chief strategy officer (CSO) at Thiel Macro, the investment firm of billionaire tech tycoon Peter Thiel, she a partner at “big four” consulting firm McKinsey & Co. With Thiel’s personal fortune soaring on the success of Palantir Technologies — the company’s worth has more than doubled since its October 2020 IPO — it follows that the Valentinos have also benefited from the wealth generating machine that seems to surround the PayPal cofounder.
Perhaps the Perry home’s most striking feature is its ultra-private location. Tucked deem into the mountains above Beverly Hills, the house sits in a guarded enclave off Coldwater Canyon, and lies behind private, electronically controlled driveway gates. An appreciably large motorcourt has room for several vehicles; beyond that, double doors lead to an outdoor walkway that leads past the pool before one finally arrives at the front door.
Inside the 1960s structure — it’s perhaps best described as a sprawling traditional, though it doesn’t strictly adhere to any particular architectural style — adjoining formal living and dining rooms both offer direct access to the gardens via French doors. There’s also an updated kitchen with high-end appliances and neutral decor, a theme that continues into a breakfast nook warmed by a fireplace.
The roughly 4,400-square-foot rambler also sports four bedrooms, including two ensuite guest rooms on the main level. Upstairs, the second floor is entirely devoted to a lavish master retreat with a spa-style bathroom, private veranda with serene mountain views, and a closet that would satisfy any hardcore clotheshorse. The fourth bedroom — best suited for staff or as a recording studio — is tucked above the garage, adjacent to a cozy gym.
Back outside, the nearly acre of land is commendably private, surrounded on all sides by mature trees and a grassy yard. An oval-shaped pool adds a classic Hollywood touch to the estate, and a variety of secluded patios offer options for meditation or romantic liaisons.
Brett Lawyer at Hilton & Hyland held the listing; Josh Flagg at Rodeo Realty repped Valentino.
