Though he’s probably still best-known to the general public as the only child of actor Michael Keaton, Sean Douglas is also a Grammy-nominated songwriter who’s become a multimillionaire success in his own right. Over the past decade, the 37-year-old has written or co-written hit songs with major acts such as Nick Jonas, Lizzo, The Chainsmokers, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Sia.
Douglas scored his first Grammy nomination in 2016 for his writing credits on Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man,” which became one of country music’s biggest hits of the year. And in 2020, he signed a global publishing agreement with Warner Chappell Music that will keep him under the company’s lucrative umbrella for some time.
With wife Rachel, Douglas resides primarily in Los Angeles — the couple own a $2.6 million midcentury modern home on one of the best streets in Silver Lake — but their real estate horizons expanded shortly after his publishing deal was inked. Douglas subsequently plunked down $3.2 million for a 1920s compound in Montecito that’s just a short jog to the community’s posh downtown area.
Built by noted architect Carleton Winslow and completed in 1925, the Spanish Colonial-style estate features a U-shaped main villa painted a pastel pink. Set behind a long driveway that’s shared with three other homes and trundles over a wooden bridge before it reaches the Douglas estate, there’s an additional circular motorcourt plus a detached two-car garage — from the motorcourt, a crunchy gravel path leads past gardens filled with colorful native plantings. The arched front door opens into a foyer that connects to the baronial living room, with its vaulted and exposed-beam ceilings, skylights, and an original fireplace.
