Way back in 2012, Nasir “Nas” Jones was up to his ears in tax debt, and even lost his Georgia home to a much-publicized foreclosure. But nowadays, things seem to be looking up for the iconic hip-hop artist. Not only did he win his first-ever Grammy earlier this year for the rap album “King’s Disease” — after no less than 14 prior nominations — but he also recently picked up the keys to a massive $3.5 million mansion in the semi-rural outskirts of Calabasas.
Originally listed for $2.5 million, the structure — kind of a Mediterranean-meets-Southwestern architectural-style mashup — was custom built in 2007, and includes four bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms spread across more than 6,500 square feet of living space rife with soaring ceilings, arched doorways and limestone floors. Those features, and the property’s 10+ acres of land, attracted a bidding war.
Resting beyond a lengthy driveway, and protected by gates and security cameras, Nas’ new spread is secluded and surrounded by picturesque mountain vistas. A spacious motorcourt flanked by an eight-car garage fronts the multilevel house, which greets with a double-height foyer displaying a wrought-iron staircase. Steps lead up to the main level, which is highlighted by a fireside living room with built-in bookshelves and glass sliders that spill out onto a terrace. A gourmet kitchen is outfitted with a center island, high-end Viking appliances and granite countertops, plus a breakfast nook and butler’s pantry; there’s also a fireside family room, formal dining room and an office.
Some of the home’s other standout features include a huge wine cellar with tasting area, and a billiards room sporting a wet bar. A sumptuous master retreat features a two-way fireplace, sitting room, private balcony, dual walk-in closets and a separate gym, as well as a luxe spa-like bath with a jetted soaking tub and steam shower. Additional amenities can be found outdoors, where the backyard holds an al fresco dining patio with a built-in barbecue, plus a grotto-style pool with a spa, waterfall and water slide. Topping it all off: a roof deck with enormous views for days.
Nas, 48, began his musical career in 1991 as a featured artist on Main Source’s song “Live at the Barbecue.” He released his debut album “Illmatic” in 1994, and followed that up in 1996 with “It Was Written,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Ranked among “The Greatest MCs of All Time” by MTV, Nas has sold more than 25 million records worldwide and lays claim to eight platinum albums. Also a record producer, entrepreneur and actor, he has an estimated net worth of around $70 million.
Angela Waters of Harcourts Prime Properties held the listing; Nas was repped by Alex Duk of Harcourts Beverly Hills.
