For many years, Kendrick Lamar has lived in the seaside town of Manhattan Beach. After years of renting, the acclaimed rapper and songwriter bought a brand-new mansion there three years ago, where the sandy beach and deep blue sea lie just two short blocks from his doorstep. But now he’s making moves far more inland, having just completed the purchase of a traditional-style spread in the prime East Gate neighborhood of Bel Air.
Records show Lamar doled out $15.9 million for his new estate, nearly the seller’s full asking price. Built in the early 1950s and designed by noted L.A. architect Edward Fickett, the creamy wood and brick-accented structure has been vigorously “renewed” and expanded since then, and includes a main house and two-story guesthouse — for a total of seven bedrooms and eight baths in just over 8,000 square feet of living space.
Hidden away behind walls and gates, on a flat parcel of land spanning nearly three-quarters of an acre, Lamar’s new home has a two-car garage and additional parking space for up to eight vehicles tucked off to the side. Though current MLS images are scarce, a previous rental listing does show a spacious living/dining area adorned with warm hardwood floors, a brick fireplace and access to a covered terrace.
Other highlights include an atrium-like family room, which connects to an updated kitchen outfitted with an eat-in island, high-end stainless appliances, a butler’s pantry and an adjacent breakfast room. Sequestered down a lengthy hallway, the private master retreat has a fireside sitting area, along with a large bath sporting dual vanities and a clawfoot soaking tub; and elsewhere is an office/library, a movie theater, wine cellar and gym.
More amenities can be found outdoors, where the grassy and fenced grounds hold a pool and spa surrounded by a sundeck, koi pond and an al fresco dining area. There’s also the aforementioned guesthouse, which holds a living/dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bath and laundry area on the ground level, plus two more bedrooms and a bath upstairs
Over the course of his 20-year music career, Lamar has certainly achieved rare levels of success. The 35-year-old Compton native won a whopping 14 Grammys out of 39 nominations, nabbed a Pulitzer Prize for “DAMN.” — the first nonclassical or jazz recording ever to earn the coveted honor for music — and even appeared in a novel hip hop-centric Super Bowl halftime show earlier this year.
In addition to his Bel Air and Manhattan Beach homes, Lamar also owns a Calabasas residence long occupied by several of his family members.
