Just over three months ago, Kehlani sold an updated Simi Valley estate for $1.85 million. Now the Grammy-nominated R&B singer/songwriter has taken some of those profits and coughed up $1.7 million for a decidedly more rustic, off-the-grid retreat in hippy-dippy Topanga Canyon.
An Oakland native, Kehlani began a musical career as lead vocalist in the rock band PopLyfe, which finished in fourth place on the sixth season of “America’s Got Talent” in 2011. The 26-year-old then embarked on a solo career, releasing the breakout mixtape “You Should Be Here” in 2015, followed by a full-length “SweetSexySavage” debut album two years later. Along the way, the Oakland native has collaborated with artists such as Cardi B and Justin Bieber, with her newest album “Blue Water Road” set for release this year.
Per the listing, Kehlani’s newly acquired home was rebuilt from the ground up in 2009, and rests on a private street nestled amid the remote and ruggedly scenic mountains between Malibu and L.A.’s San Fernando Valley. Numerous decks provide seamless indoor-outdoor environs, and windows throughout frame picturesque treetop and cross-canyon views.
Weighing in at a little more than 1,300 square feet, the redwood-clad structure is hidden away on a parcel surrounded by a dense collection of native trees, and includes four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths spread across three levels.
Main-level highlights include a cozy family room, plus a dining area with a built-in banquette that opens to a deck ideal for al fresco dining. The adjacent kitchen is outfitted with an eat-in bar and ebony appliances; upstairs, there’s a fireside den, and primary bedroom with a balcony and ensuite bath.
The lower level holds a separate office/studio with a half-bath, and elsewhere on the property is a treehouse-like guesthouse. Outdoors, the grounds are dotted with eucalyptus, oak and fruit trees, and offer terraced gardens, a koi pond, paved lounging patio, meditation grotto, children’s playhouse and chicken coop.
