Kanye West’s Minimalist Former Hollywood Hills Home Resurfaces on the Market

Let’s rewind back to 2003, long before Ye (née Kanye West) was gracing Forbes magazine covers and before he’d even released his first studio album. One of the Chicago-based mogul’s first splurges as a successful music producer was this Hollywood Hills home, which he bought for about $1.8 million in December of that year. Sequestered just above Hollywood Boulevard and directly below Mount Olympus near the eastern end of L.A.’s Sunset Strip, the contemporary home has three bedrooms and four bathrooms in 4,200 square feet of multi-level living space.

West soon gave the property a Brutalist-tinged makeover in his signature minimalist style, and continued to live there as his fame and bank account balances swelled. He ended up holding onto the property for a very long time, especially by celebrity standards — he didn’t sell the place until 2017.

During his 14 years of ownership, West occupied the house as a bachelor and later briefly shared it with Kim Kardashian. The couple soon moved to a pricey Bel Air mansion, though they reportedly kept the Hollywood Hills property in their portfolio because Kardashian used it as storage space for her giant wardrobe’s overflow. (No, seriously.)

Once their new Hidden Hills mega-compound was finally complete, the Kardashian-West Hollywood property was sold off for just under $3 million to its current owner — Rufus Hankey, a son of local billionaire Don Hankey. It appears Hankey has changed little about the home in the four years since he secured the keys, with all those signature Kanye decor touches still intact.

The younger Hankey has now moved to the guard-gated community of Beverly Park, where he recently dropped $27 million on the former estate of late media mogul Sumner Redstone. Thus, the Hollywood Hills digs are newly back up for sale, looking very similar to how they did in 2017 but asking an increased $3.699 million.

Highlights include an imposingly all-concrete front façade, secured via an elaborate camera/home automation system, hardwood floors and Venetian plaster throughout, a pared-down kitchen that looks more akin to a fancy wet bar than a “normal” kitchen, and a huge master suite on the home’s middle level with a soaking tub set below a big-picture window. The listing effusively describes the home’s style as “Tulum-modern,” that feels like living in “a gorgeous resort.”
