Hoping to capture your very own piece of the American Dream — specifically, a charming century-old estate armed with a particularly heady architecture and music background? Spare yourself the trouble if you’re running on empty when it comes to cash reserves, because you can only stay at legendary musician Jackson Browne’s onetime Santa Monica digs if you happen to have a cool $22.5 million to splash out for the keys to the coveted manor.
Commissioned in 1917 by businessman Charles Witbeck — and aptly known as the “Witbeck House” — the East Coast-inspired property was designed by noted architect brothers Charles and Henry Greene, and has since been updated while retaining many of its period details. Famously occupied by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and his actress partner Daryl Hannah around the early ’90s, the place last sold to the late TV writer/producer John Bowman for $1.3 million some 17 years ago, and it’s his widow Shannon Gaughan-Bowman who is selling the home.
Resting on a triple-lot parcel spanning over a half-acre, and bordered on all sides by towering hedges and mature trees, the three-building compound includes a five-bedroom, five-bath main house, as well as a two-bedroom guesthouse with its own kitchen and bath. Perhaps the most intriguing feature, though, is a two-story A-frame office space that once served as Browne’s home-based music studio.
As for the main house, the khaki-hued and shingled structure is adorned throughout with hardwood floors, high ceilings, decorative crown molding, built-ins and numerous French doors spilling out to the park-like backyard. While no major structural changes were undertaken during the current owner’s tenure, the interiors were lightened and brightened to reflect an English cottage vibe, and recent enhancements include colorfully painted walls, a modernized kitchen and new primary suite bath.
Among the highlights: a double-height entry foyer displaying a traditional curving staircase, which flows to a spacious formal living room spotlighted by a window bench flanked by built-in bookshelves, as well as a brightly wallpapered and chandelier-topped dining room warmed by a fireplace. A cozy sunken family room connects to the kitchen, which is outfitted with stone countertops, an eat-in island with a handy wine fridge, high-end Viking appliances and an accompanying breakfast nook boasting an integrated hutch.
Upstairs, the primary bedroom rests beneath a soaring vaulted ceiling, and holds a fireside sitting area, private balcony, walk-in closet, and tiled bath equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub and large glassy shower; and outdoors, the flat and grassy grounds host a garden area enclosed with a white picket fence and meandering gravel pathways, along with a pool and spa surrounded by a sundeck, brick-clad grilling station, and sprawling terrace ideal for al fresco lounging and entertaining. There’s also a pickle ball and paddle tennis court, plus a two-car garage.
