Musician Blackbear Drops Millions on All-New Modern Farmhouse

Though he’s not quite a household name, you’ve almost certainly come across the handiwork of singer/songwriter Matthew Musto — known professionally as Blackbear, an homage to the animal native to his home state of Florida. For starters, there’s “Boyfriend,” the massive hit he co-penned for Canadian crooner Justin Bieber. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

At 32 years old, Blackbear has become most known through the years for having collaborated with popular artists such as Nick Jonas, Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne, Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly, just to name a few. His breakthrough solo single “Hot Girl Bummer” also peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 2019.

Now Blackbear has parlayed his success into another Los Angeles residence. Records show he and wife Michele recently paid $6.4 million for trendy modern farmhouse-style digs in Encino rebuilt from the ground up in 2022. The couple got a nifty discount on the place, shaving around $600,000 off the original asking price.

Resting on a nearly half-acre parcel of land, and protected by walls, gates and a top-notch security system, the two-toned structure features six bedrooms and seven baths in 7,200 square feet of two-level living space adorned throughout with rustic hardwood floors and high ceilings. There’s also a guesthouse, poolside cabana and an attached three-car garage.

A portico entryway tops the glass-paneled front door, which opens into a double-height foyer that flows to a fireside living room. In the rear, a spacious great room holds a family room lined with a built-in entertainment unit and pocketing glass doors spilling out to a patio, while a gourmet kitchen is outfitted with custom cabinetry, an eat-in island, top-tier ebony appliances and a butler’s pantry.

Additional highlights include a formal dining room, movie theater and an office, as well as a palatial upstairs master retreat boasting a fireplace, balcony, two walk-in closets, and a spa-inspired bath equipped with dual vanities and a big oval soaking tub. Outdoors, the private and grassy backyard hosts a pool and spa flanked by an open-air cabana warmed by a fireplace, a barbecue and bar setup, and sport court.

In addition to their new Encino home, the Mustos also maintain a 15-acre estate in the Los Angeles suburb of Sunland, between the Verdugo and San Gabriel mountains.
