With a price tag pushing up on $10 million, Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis is definitely not giving away his serene, custom-built beachfront hideaway near drop-dead-gorgeous Hanalei Bay on the coveted North Shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
Tax records show the now 58-year-old platinum-selling veteran rocker, whose professional accolades include a trio of American Music Awards and half a dozen Grammys, purchased the then undeveloped beachfront property in 2005 for $2.6 million. The not-quite-half-acre parcel, as well as a similarly sized neighboring one, had previously been owned by Sylvester Stallone.
After several years of wrangling with “a winding road of government agencies,” and heated opposition from locals opposed to homes being built on the site of an ancient burial ground, Kiedis finally received the necessary permissions to custom build a three-bedroom and 3.5-bath single-story home with sweeping views of the pristine coastline. (Stallone sold the neighboring parcel in 2000 for $960,000 to California-based businessman Joe Brescia who also faced years of hoops and significant opposition to building a beachfront house that he sold in 2016 for $4.85 million.)
Hidden down a long, gated drive amid a lush tropical jungle, Kiedis’ slightly shy of 3,000-square-foot Polynesian getaway features light-filled living spaces, breezy verandas and top-grade finishes that include wide-plank walnut floorboards, reclaimed teak cabinetry and honed black basalt countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms.
Kauai’s North Shore is not only a well-known favorite spot among surfers, it’s not so quietly wildly popular with showbiz types. Some of the many former and present homeowners in the paradisiacal vicinity include Pierce Brosnan, Glenn Frey, Bette Midler, Ben Stiller, Will Smith, Chuck Norris and mononymous Spanish bombshell (and virtuoso flamenco guitarist) Charo. Last year, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan ponied up $53 million for 600 acres of land, bringing their total landholdings on Kauai to more than 1,300 acres, and Julia Roberts sold a historic beachfront compound directly on Hanalei Bay in late 2016 for $16.2 million to “The Bachelor” creator Mike Fleiss, who had it on the market earlier this year at $34.5 million.
The Kiedis property is available through Tiffany Spencer at Hawaii Life.
