Just don’t call them capricious! Barely a year after they paid exactly $17 million for a showy mansion in the mountains above Beverly Hills, Sofia Richie and her fiancée Elliot Grainge have already sold the place. The off-market deal was inked for nearly $22 million, seemingly a healthy profit for the Richie-Grainges.
Records reveal the buyer is powerful music executive Aaron Bay-Schuck, the current CEO of Warner Records. Bay-Schuck will fit in nicely on this particular cul-de-sac, which is sometimes known as “Music Row” for the many music industry folks who have occupied properties there. Nearby neighbors include Rihanna, who owns two side-by-side mansions, and Sir Paul McCartney. Madonna and Mariah Carey have also leased homes on the street.
As for Grainge, 29, he’s the son of Universal Music Group chief Lucian Grainge, who has been called the most powerful man in the music industry. Richie, 24, is the youngest child of Lionel Richie, although she remains best-known for her ill-fated romance with “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star Scott Disick. In recent years, she’s also become an influencer, inking lucrative endorsement deals with the likes of Coca-Cola, Cheetos, Uggs, CoverGirl cosmetics and many more.
Set behind gates on a knoll just above Coldwater Canyon, the house features a patterned, ivory-colored façade that soars two stories tall. Originally built in the early 1960s and designed by acclaimed midcentury architect Charles G. Kanner, the modernist house was completely rebuilt shortly prior to Richie and Grainge’s 2021 purchase. Within about 8,000 square feet of living space, there are six bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms, Steelcase windows throughout, an open kitchen with designer appliances, a library that converts into a movie theater at the touch of a button, and a master suite with dual baths and a private terrace. Out back, a saltwater swimming pool is adjoined by a cabana with an outdoor kitchen, wet bar, al fresco dining area and fireplace.
Kanner’s original design was heavily influenced by the Bauhaus architectural movement, in addition to the work of leading architects at that time — Rudolph Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra among them. In its current iteration, the structure is perhaps more of a glassy contemporary mansion, though hints of its humbler modernist roots still shine through.
No word yet on where Grainge and Richie have moved, but they were recently spotted house-hunting in Montecito. As for Bay-Schuck, he previously owned a gorgeous mansion elsewhere in the mountains above Beverly Hills, acquired in 2019 for $11 million. Records reveal that house was quietly sold off last month for $15 million to an as-yet-unidentified celebrity.
