Barely a year after she paid $3.9 million for her very first home, Emma Chamberlain has already bid the place adieu. The 20-year-old YouTube sensation has sold her West Hollywood architectural showpiece for $4.1 million, slightly more than the $4 million she had asked and a $200,000 profit on paper — though that money was likely swallowed up by hefty realtor commissions, closing costs, taxes and pesky maintenance.
Records reveal the buyer is Per Sandell, a longtime director at Snapchat. Sandell’s equity holdings likely have ballooned handsomely over the past year, as Snapchat now sports a market cap of nearly $100 billion, with the company’s stock price up a whopping 500% over the trailing 12 months.
Built in 2016 and first occupied by pot mogul and MedMen cofounder Andrew Modlin, the 4,000-square-foot contemporary stands out with its strikingly angular, vaguely Brutalist-like expanses of concrete. Walls of glass flood the monolithic, minimalist interiors with light, and the place is packed with high-tech wizardry — a state-of-the-art security system, and automatic blackout window coverings that can be controlled at the push of a button.
Hidden behind gates and more than 70 olive and ficus trees, per the listing, the four-bed, five-bath home features an hulking metal front door that swings into an open-plan living area. There are industrial touches — polished concrete floors, a floating glass-and-steel staircase — thought the house is livened up by vibrant pops of color. The downstairs bedroom/library has a canary yellow door, as does the guest bathroom, and there are orange chairs and rich wooden bookshelves.
Also on the main level are a living room with its own pea gravel courtyard and a Euro-spec, ultramodern kitchen outfitted with top-end appliances; the kitchen connects to the expansive family room and opens to the backyard via disappearing walls of glass. Upstairs, a vast skylight overlooks a long indoor balcony. There are three upper level bedrooms, all of them with ensuite baths, the master is complete with a apartment-sized closet and its own sitting area, plus soaring glass windows.
The .15-acre flat lot includes a grassy backyard and a rectangular swimming pool. At the property’s far rear is a sculpture-like cabana hewn entirely from concrete, complete with a BBQ center, fireplace, and al fresco dining space, plus a projector that displays films on the wall of the cabana — so guests can actually watch a film while wading in the pool.
No word yet about what the next stop on Chamberlain’s real estate journey will be, but the NorCal native has had a whirlwind last few years, with 10.2 million subscribers and 1.4 billion lifetime views on YouTube, not to mention the launch of her successful Chamberlain Coffee brand, so a residential upgrade seems likely.
Casey Winchell of Kennedy Wilson Real Estate held the listing; Jeffrey Hsieh of Keller Williams repped the buyer.
