Turning his childhood obsession with cars into a career has proved to be a very profitable decision for Doug DeMuro, the YouTuber who now boasts 4.4 million subscribers and 1.6 billion lifetime views. Now one of the platform’s top automotive reviewers, DeMuro’s influencer status gave him the brand oomph to kickstart Cars & Bids, the car-auction website that launched in 2020 and has been successful.
Beyond his passion for cars — he owns six, including oddities such as a Mercedes G-Wagen cabriolet and an imported Audi RS2 Avant — DeMuro has a love for historic architecture, particularly Victorian-era architecture.
The Denver native and his longtime wife Joanna already own their primary residence, a landmarked 1913 house in San Diego. But the family has long vacationed in Nantucket, visiting the dune-filled Massachusetts island at least once every year.
With DeMuro’s rapidly increasing income, it made sense he would finally invest in putting down residential roots on his favorite island. Dirt went hunting for the 34-year-old’s new vacation digs; unsurprisingly, the house in question turned out to be located in the village of Siasconset (“Sconset”), arguably the most charming part of Nantucket.
Filled with rose-covered homes, meandering streets and English-style gardens, Sconset was first developed as a whaling colony in the 1600s. While tax records say DeMuro’s home was built circa 1800, we suspect that date is incorrect. That’s because online resources indicate the structure was designed and built by Charles H. Robinson, a Nantucket native who was born in 1829 and built many area homes during the 1870s and 1880s.
Robinson, who was reportedly both a developer and an architect, was fond of Victorian architecture and styled the DeMuro house in the gothic revival manner. The roughly 3,000-square-foot residence was never officially listed for sale, so further details are scant, but public records show DeMuro’s entity paid exactly $3.5 million for the property. Last sold in 2006 for $2.5 million, the home had once been offered as a pricey vacation rental, and dated listings provide a few clues about the vintage property’s interiors.
In other news, DeMuro isn’t the only YouTuber who enjoys visiting New England — his longtime nemesis Scotty Kilmer recently paid cash for a quaint Rhode Island cottage that’s only about 60 miles due west, as the crow flies.
