Earlier this year, actor Simon Helberg — best known for his role as nerdy engineer/astronaut Howard Wolowitz on long-running sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” — doled out nearly $8.4 million for a historic English Tudor Revival mansion in Pasadena. Unsurprisingly, the 41-year-old California native has now decided to offload his other house, a Spanish Colonial-style estate in the prime Los Feliz Oaks enclave, asking a speck under $9.9 million.
Originally built way back in the 1930s, and once owned by both Vince Vaughn and Kate Bosworth (at separate times, of course), the previous owners paid $3.9 million for the place in May 2018 as an investment, and subsequently sold to Helberg and his longtime wife Jocelyn Towne a year later for almost $6.9 million. The couple then embarked upon an extensive restoration and modernization of the two-story stucco and terracotta-roof structure in collaboration with Los Angeles design firm Nickey Kehoe.
Tucked away in a secluded cul-de-sac, and securely protected by gates and cameras, the six-bedroom, six-bath house is sited on three parcels spanning three-quarters of an acre, all of it dotted with fruit trees and wildflowers. Designated as a certified monarch butterfly waystation, the flat grassy grounds also hold a pool and spa, koi pond, professionally-designed gardens and terraced hillside with seating area, plus a guesthouse and two-car garage.
A set of mosaic-tiled steps lead from the motorcourt and up to a wood-carved front door, which opens into a little more than 4,000 square feet of living space on two levels adorned throughout with arched doorways, wood-beam ceilings and wide-plank oak floors. A spacious foyer steps down into a fireside living room with large picture windows and French doors spilling out to a pergola-topped patio.
Elsewhere on the main level is a wet bar-equipped family room that connects to gourmet kitchen outfitted with an eat-in island, marble countertops, mustard-hued cabinetry and high-end appliances, including a pricey La Cornue range. An adjoining breakfast nook and den has French doors flowing out to a covered al fresco dining area hosting an outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue and fireplace.
Upstairs, four ensuite bedrooms encompass a master retreat sporting a balcony and custom walk-in closet with skylight, along with an updated bath featuring dual vanities, an oval soaking tub, steam shower and an infrared sauna. A craft room/office space on the lower level could also be easily converted into an extra bedroom, per the listing.
In addition to his two Los Angeles-area homes, Helberg also maintains a 6.5-acre equestrian estate in Carpinteria, just south of Santa Barbara and Montecito. The Los Feliz listing is held by Elisa Ritt and Anthony Stellini of Compass.
