Though Mahershala Ali already owns two homes, one in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles and the other in Philadelphia’s historic Germantown enclave, the Oscar-winning actor has decided to add to his residential real estate portfolio with a serene getaway in the North Hills area of Oakland. Property records show Ali and his producer/actress wife Amatus Sami-Karim doled out nearly $1.2 million for their new house, which was originally listed for a smidge under $1 million.
An Oakland native, the 48-year-old veteran film and TV actor’s breakout role came when he was cast as Remy Danton on Netflix’s “House of Cards.” He’s also appeared in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Hunger Games, Alita: Battle Angel” and “True Detective.” But Ali is perhaps best known for his performances in “Moonlight” and “Green Book,” both of which earned him Oscars for Best Supporting Actor.
Ali recently nabbed his first leading role in Apple TV’s sci-fi drama “Swan Song” and is set to star in the upcoming Marvel Comics film “Blade.” Together, Ali and his wife earned an Emmy for their work as executive producers on the HBO documentary “We are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Fest.”
Built in the early 1960s, Ali’s newly acquired home has four bedrooms and three baths in just over 2,100 square feet of living space embellished throughout with hardwood and tile floors, high wood-paneled ceilings and skylights. An attached two-car garage fronts the rustic wood-shingled structure, with a set of steps off to the side descending to a deck and the front door.
Once inside, the main level is highlighted by a fireside living room framed with walls of glass that connects to a small dining area and an eat-in kitchen outfitted with stone countertops, a decorative copper range hood and stainless appliances. There are three bedrooms on this floor, including a master suite featuring a tile bath equipped with a glass-block accents, dual vanities and a combination tub/shower.
The lower level is ideal for visiting guests, complete with an en-suite bedroom, a full kitchen, and family room sporting a cozy red brick fireplace with a floating hearth and sliding glass doors spilling out to a balcony. Outdoors, the almost quarter-acre grounds host a backyard deck ideal for al-fresco dining and lounging amid the woodsy surroundings.
