Though she’s been playing Annie Marks on the NBC drama “Good Girls,” cancelled in June after four seasons, Mae Whitman is now gaining renewed notice for her role as Bianca in the 2015 rom-com “The Duff.” Now topping the streaming charts on Netflix, it’s about a high school senior who reinvents herself after finding out she’s secretly referred to as a “designated ugly fat friend.” Whitman, who recently opened up on Twitter about her pansexual identity, is also currently voicing Amity Blight in Disney Channel’s animated series “The Owl House,” which showcases the LGBTQ community.
Speaking of houses, the actress recently traded one Los Angeles home for another. Property records show she’s just doled out $2.9 million for a dandy little midcentury modern number in the prestigious Linda Vista neighborhood of Pasadena. Meanwhile, her former home — a historic Spanish-style property tucked away in Studio City — has just sold in a $3.1 million off-market deal.
An L.A. native, the 33-year-old veteran film and TV actress began her career at age 6 in the film “When a Man Loves a Woman” and went on to get her first leading role in “The Duff.” She also has appeared in “Arrested Development,” “The Jungle Book 2,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” But her most well-known gig was as Amber Holt on “Parenthood,” which earned her a Gracie Award for “Outstanding Female Actor in a Breakthrough Role” and a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for “Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.”
Known as “The Bonham House,” Whitman’s new Pasadena property was originally designed by lesser-known modernist architect Leland Evison and built in 1950. It’s since been updated, complete with fine-grade redwood paneled walls and ceilings, and Brazilian slate floors throughout. Expansive Fleetwood sliders open seamlessly to a rear patio that runs nearly the entire length of the house.
The listing was held by Jimmy Wilson of Deasy Penner Podley; Whitman was repped by Rob Kallick of Compass.

Image Credit: Redfin As for her former Studio City home (below), Whitman acquired that place in 2018 for nearly $2.5 million. Built way back in 1936, the Spanish-style property features three bedrooms and three baths in just over 3,200 square feet, and has since been expanded and reimagined per the listing. Resting atop a private knoll comprising three lots, and secluded from the street behind a wooden gate and lush landscaping, the terracotta-roof house boasts a fireside great room topped by a soaring wood-beam ceiling, plus a gourmet kitchen outfitted with polished concrete countertops and high-end stainless appliances, and a master suite with a large walk-in closet and luxe bath. A grassy backyard holds an inviting patio with a firepit and a pool flanked by a massive stone fireplace.
Rob Kallick of Compass listed the Studio City house, with Stefani Stolper of The Beverly Hills Estates repping Whitman.
