Over two decades ago, telenovela star Kate del Castillo relocated from her native Mexico City to Los Angeles to break into the movie industry. She went on to play an undocumented immigrant in the 2007 film “Under the Same Moon,” one of the highest-grossing Spanish-language theatrical releases in U.S. history. The 50-year-old showbiz veteran has been on a hot professional streak ever since.
Not only did Castillo found Cholawood Productions — which has a first-look development deal with Boomdog, the Mexico City-based division of Endemol Shine North America — but she also gained international recognition for her role as drug trafficker Teresa Mendoza in the Telemundo crime drama “La Reina del Sur,” which is now streaming on Netflix. She’s currently starring in the TV series “Volver a Caer,” based on the Leo Tolstoy novel “Anna Karenina.”
Castillo’s multifaceted success enabled her to purchase a $2.3 million home in a gated community in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles a few years back. Having recently sold that place for profit-assuring $4.7 million, records reveal she has upgraded her residential circumstances, having doled out $5.4 million for a striking transitional-style estate in a coveted pocket of Encino.
Originally built in the 1980s and recently reimagined, Castillo’s newly acquired residence is tucked away behind walls and gates, on almost a half-acre parcel offering sweeping city lights and mountain views. Inside the two-tone structure are five bedrooms and six baths spread across over 5,500 square feet of two-level living space, which comes complete with blonde hardwood floors, high wood-beam ceilings, white oak-paneled walls, custom wainscoting and steel-case windows throughout.
In addition to a formal fireside living room and chandelier-topped dining room, there’s also a rear great room boasting a family room adorned with a statement-making fireplace and pocketing glass doors spilling out to a wood deck ideal for al fresco entertaining. A breakfast nook sporting a built-in armoire connects to the sleekly designed kitchen, which is equipped with soft-close cabinetry and drawers, Thermador appliances, and an eat-in island topped with marble; and elsewhere are a charcoal-hued movie theater and an office.
A curving staircase holding court in a statue-clad foyer heads upstairs, where the snazzy master retreat rests beneath a vaulted ceiling, and is decked out with a fireplace, private balcony and walk-in closet, plus a porcelain-tiled bath holding dual vanities, a soaking tub and glass-encased shower. Outdoors, the grassy backyard overlooks those picturesque vistas, and features an infinity-edge pool and spa surrounded by a wood sundeck with a fire-pit, a kitchen and barbecue setup, and covered pavilion.
Rounding it all out: high-tech home automation and surveillance systems, along with a circular motorcourt and an attached three-car garage.
