A stunning relic of a long-bygone era, this Craftsman-style mansion sold for $4.6 million a veritable ice age ago — way back in late 2020. But since the house has been mostly vacant and undergoing gradual renovations for the last three years, it wasn’t clear until now that the buyer was prolific actor and filmmaker Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Built circa 1906 and designed by an acclaimed local architect, the 117-year-old house has reportedly changed hands only six times — the prior occurrence being way back in 2001 for $2 million.
With seven bedrooms and 6.5 baths in nearly 8,000 square feet of living space, the cavernous old house is a treasure trove of spectacular woodwork, plus abundant hallways and lots of neat nooks and crannies. Behind its demure blue paint, visually brightened up by red and white accents, the structure also offers three full floors and a basement level with a billiard room and wine cellar.
Architecture purists may decry some of the home’s modern interior updates, including its fully renovated kitchen and master bath, but there’s no denying the place now offers the requisite luxury amenities that buyers in this price range demand. And original features still abound, including wainscoting and the quarter-sawn oak hardwood floors throughout.
A Los Angeles native, Gordon-Levitt has long resided in the Silver Lake neighborhood, where he’s owned a four-bedroom home for nearly 15 years. The actor, perhaps best known for his roles on “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “500 Days of Summer” and “Inception,” Â is married to tech entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, whose mother is an adopted daughter of the late billionaire real estate developer Melvin Simon.
