With an upcoming Netflix sitcom under his belt (“Unstable,” premiering March 30 and co-starring dad Rob Lowe), writer-actor John Owen Lowe’s Hollywood career is solidly on the upswing. Unsurprisingly, records show the 28-year-old has now put down real estate stakes in Los Angeles, where he’s bought an impressive home from “Dancing With the Stars” alum Derek Hough.
Perched atop a steep hillside in Sherman Oaks, the single-level ranch house was built in the 1950s. Purchased by Hough three years ago for just $1.2 million, the residence was subsequently completely rebuilt and finished late last year. Contemporary features include a two-car garage that’s been converted into a full-fledged ADU, complete with a bedroom and full bathroom; the main house offers three beds and 2.5 baths.
Large windows flood the house with natural light, while oak hardwood floors and brass fixtures add warmth to the modern interiors. An open marble kitchen features Viking appliances and an eat-in island with space for five diners, plus direct access to more formal dining and living areas, the latter with sliding glass doors opening to the backyard.
The master suite includes an all-new bathroom and walk-in closet with bespoke cabinetry, but the best amenity are its long views from the bedroom, which sweep over a huge swath of the San Fernando Valley and surrounding hills. The bedroom also offers direct access to the backyard, which sports an AstroTurf lawn, patios for lounging and al fresco dining, and a built-in BBQ center. A trapezoidal plunge pool provides guests with the option of watery sunbathing while framing more of those spectacular views.
Lowe was raised in the affluent Montecito neighborhood, where his parents recently bought a historic fixer-upper estate. The Lowe family also once owned a custom-built Montecito mansion, recently valued at $52 million, which is now owned by Adam Levine.
