Though the long-running ABC sitcom “Modern Family” finally wrapped its 11-season run last year, Jesse Tyler Ferguson seems busier than ever. Not only has he begun hosting HGTV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” reboot, the Montana native also turned his popular culinary blog with best friend and chef Julie Tanous into a collection of recipes called “Food Between Friends: A Cookbook.”
And now that his showbiz-pedigreed Los Feliz home — once owned by Gwen Stefani — is in escrow, the prolific actor and his husband, lawyer Justin Mikita, can add settling into a new mansion, this one in a decidedly more suburban and family-friendly area of town, to their to-do list.
Their new purchase, picked up for $8.7 million: a newly-built gated estate described as an “architectural masterpiece” in the listing. Created by design-build firm Industrial Strength Development, the palatial property lies in the star-studded neighborhood of Encino, arguably the new Beverly Hills of L.A.’s San Fernando Valley.
Nestled behind gates on a more than half-acre lot rife with oak trees and expansive greenery, the structure’s façade stuns with a mix of natural stone, cedar cladding and shou sugi ban (Japanese burnt wood siding). Inside the seven-bedroom, eight-bath home, 9,000 square feet of light-filled living space on three levels is equally arresting, complete with hand-milled woodwork, seamless indoor-outdoor environs, and Fleetwood doors and windows presenting jetliner views at every turn.
Highlights include a gourmet kitchen outfitted with Calacatta porcelain countertops and custom white oak cabinetry; temperature-controlled wine cellar flanked by a walk-in bar; and master suite that opens to a 1,200-square-foot balcony sporting a fire table. There’s also oversized windows, dual walk-in closets, and a spa-like bath clad in floor-to-ceiling limestone and exotic Zellige tile.
A 12-person movie theater and concession area makes the lower level stand out as the ideal spot for family time, while the resort-like backyard is showcased by a pool and almost 3,000 feet of decking. Topping it all off: a guest house with an upper loft, murphy bed, kitchen, bath and double-layer deck.
Gina Michelle and George Ouzounian, both of The Agency, held the listing with Dennis Chernov of Keller Williams; Jennifer Akbari of Compass represented the buyers.
