Cheryl Hines Buys and Sells in L.A.’s Mandeville Canyon

Having quietly sealed an off-market deal for a designer-done Mediterranean villa hidden amid effusive gardens in L.A.’s rustic and refined Mandeville Canyon neighborhood, Cheryl Hines has not so surprisingly put her circa 1937 white-brick Monterey Colonial-esque house, also in Mandeville Canyon, up for grabs at $6.2 million.

The twice Emmy nominated “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star and her husband, environmental attorney and anti-vaccine advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — he was banned from Instagram earlier this year for “repeatedly sharing debunked claims” about the Covid-19 vaccine, purchased the property in 2017, while battling tabloid rumors of the demise of their marriage, for $5.2 million from film producer Basil Iwanyk and his wife Natalie Reismann.

Over the last handful of years, the Hines-Kennedys made several important alterations across the nearly half-acre spread that’s set behind a high hedgerow and secured gates: They completely redid the front yard, replacing a brick-accented concrete parking pad with a much more elegant cobblestone one; In the kitchen, where the classy grey-and-white checkerboard marble flooring and much of the existing cabinetry was kept, a giant marble dining table that floated in the center of the room under a trio of industrial-style lights was swapped for an even bigger, white marble-topped work island and snack bar; And in the backyard, they ripped out a large square of lawn, paved it over with stone tiles, and added a fire pit.

Listings held by Jonathan Carr and Ari Afshar of Ari Afshar and Associates at Compass show there’s a total of almost 5,500 square feet between the four-bedroom and four-and-a-half-bath main house and a semi-attached garage conversion that contains a staff or guest suite with private bathroom as well as a concrete-floored media lounge that flows out to the backyard through a row of French doors. Set against a steep slope on an upper terrace, an eye-shaped spa spills over into a freeform swimming pool surrounded by stone terracing.

The Hines-Kennedys have already decamped their Monterey Colonial, which has been cleared of personal belongings and staged for the selling process. At about 5,900 square feet, their new home, which they picked up for a tetch more than $6.6 million, is just up the road a short piece and only somewhat larger than their old house. In addition to the five-bedroom main house and a separate studio-style guest suite, the gated property offers garaging for four cars — a real upgrade, since their former home does not have an enclosed garage, a Tiki bar alongside the lagoon-style swimming pool, and lush, densely packed gardens brimming with verdant foliage, flowering plants and several kinds of fruit trees.
