The enduring success of The CW’s “Riverdale” series, now in its sixth season, has helped spawn many a millionaire thespian; over the last year, stars Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch and Lili Reinhart have all bought pricey Los Angeles homes to match their ascendant industry status. Now they’re joined in the real estate game by co-star Charles Melton, known for his portrayal of local jock Reggie Mantle on the show.
Melton’s residence of choice lies on one of the most desirable streets in Silver Lake, with hillside views overlooking the city. The $3 million property was built over 100 years ago and consists of a Craftsman-style main house — what the listing terms a “California bungalow” — separated from a backyard guest studio by a saltwater pool/spa combo. Both structures are painted a striking army green, and both include recently updated contemporary interiors.
With three bedrooms and three bathrooms, the roomy main house sports an unusual “upside-down” floorplan, with the two guest bedrooms on the upper floor and the primary owner’s suite tucked away on the lower level. The public reception areas are also on the upper level, and consist of a giant great room dominated by a vaulted, exposed-beam ceiling and dotted by a handful of skylights. Polished henna-hued hardwood floors — not original to the house — connect the open living area to the similarly open dining area and kitchen, where there are gray cabinets, gray countertops and newer stainless appliances.
Downstairs lies a secondary living room off the primary suite, which has a walk-in closet and updated bath. Sliding glass doors spill outside, where a concrete patio and patches of AstroTurf encircle the dark-bottomed pool and spa. For al fresco entertaining, there’s a wet bar with a built-in BBQ; the listing also notes there are a whopping 900 square feet of Trex decking off the upper level, connected to the lower yard by a long exterior staircase.
For discreet entries and exits, the detached guesthouse is located at the far rear of the street-to-street property, with its own driveway and carport. The compact space includes one bathroom and a conjoined bedroom/living area, and would be equally suitable as a spacious owner’s office or as a rental/income affair.
Born in Alaska but raised mainly in Kansas by an American father and a Korean emigrant mother, Melton moved to L.A. after dropping out of college to pursue acting. While his Reggie Mantle character in “Riverdale” was his first big break, and the role for which he remains most widely known, he’s also appeared in “American Horror Story,” in the 2019 teen drama film “The Sun Is Also a Star,” in 2020’s Will Smith-helmed blockbuster “Bad Boys for Life” and will appear in the upcoming Paramount picture “Secret Headquarters.”
Luisa Ferrante of Sotheby’s International Realty held the property listing; Tyler Jacobs of Sotheby’s International Realty repped the buyer.
