Actress Candice King, one of the stars of the cult-favorite supernatural teen series “The Vampire Diaries,” and musician Joe King, songwriter and guitarist for the Denver-based rock band The Fray, have hung an almost $4.2 million price tag on their family home in L.A.’s Sherman Oaks community.
Candice, who also popped up in the “Vampire Diaries” spin-off “The Originals,” and Joe, whose salad days with The Fray seems to have been the mid- to late-Aughts, when they were nominated for four Grammys and won three Billboard Music Awards, acquired the then brand-new home just about four years ago for $3.2 million.
Built in the modern farmhouse style that has proliferated across the San Fernando Valley over the last ten years, the handsome, partly shingled and partly board-and-batten-sided two-story home, listed with Ingrid Sacerio of The Agency, measures in at more than 5,000 square feet with five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms. Notable creature comforts include a whole-house audio system with in-ceiling speakers, a butler’s pantry, three fireplaces and custom built-ins throughout.
A tomato red front door opens to a center hall entry and double-height stair hall where the awkward, triangular space under the stairs is cleverly utilized as a doghouse complete with a doghouse-shaped outline around the arched doorway. The formal living room has a simple white marble fireplace and slim dark wood beams across the painted wood ceiling, and the couple’s embrace of a casual, family-oriented lifestyle is showcased in the adjoining dining room where they’ve playfully swapped out a conventional dining room set with a ping pong table. Positioned at the back of the house, where it opens to the backyard, the airy and spacious great room incorporates an gourmet kitchen with designer culinary accoutrement and book-matched marble (or marble-like) backsplashes, a sunny breakfast bay and a family room with a fireplace between built-in display cabinet. A wide bank of full-height windows fold open for a seamless merger with the outdoor living spaces.
There’s a guest bedroom and bath on the main floor, and three more upstairs plus the homeowner’s suite. Along with a sitting area with whitewashed brick fireplace and a private balcony, the roomy suite has two fitted walk-in closets and a gleaming marble bathroom with over-sized steam shower and separate soaking tub.
Encircled in thick and tall hedging that effectively blocks out neighboring homes, the flat and grassy backyard offers a couple of covered porches, one for dining, the other for lounging, and an azure-tiled spa that spills over into a simple, rectangular swimming pool.
