Back in 2016, Ben Platt struck a chord with millions of people who struggle with mental-health issues when he starred in the hit Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen” — a fictional story about teen suicide that’s sparked a conversation making many feel “understood and cared for,” and giving others a “survivor toolbox of how to get through this situation.”
The next year, the Los Angeles native became the youngest solo recipient of the Tony Award for “Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical,” and the show has since been adapted into a 2021 film starring Platt. Along the way, the actor, singer and songwriter received a Golden Globe nod for his 2019 turn in the Netflix comedy-drama series “The Politician”; he’s also heading out on tour in September to promote his second studio album “Reverie.”
Platt, 28, is now making a splash of the real estate variety, having doled out $3.5 million for a 1920s Spanish-style home in L.A.’s historic Los Feliz neighborhood. Records show he faced a bidding war for the property, with the place selling after 20 days on the market for a little more than $300,000 over the original ask.
That hefty sum netted him a “restored and “reimagined” property featuring four bedrooms and three baths in just over 2,600 square feet of living space adorned with a mix of period details and modern amenities.
Built in the late 1920s, and walled and gated for privacy, the two-story stucco and terracotta-roof structure is fronted by a walkway that flows through the lushly landscaped yard before emptying into a spacious courtyard. Mosaic-tiled steps lead up to the wood front door, which opens into an entry hall displaying a curving wrought-iron staircase.
From there, a formal step-down living room resting beneath a coved ceiling sports a decorative fireplace and large picture window. A dining area connects via an archway to an updated kitchen outfitted with custom cabinetry, a moveable eat-in island and high-end stainless appliances; and other main-level highlights include an office with a built-in desk and bookshelves, plus an ensuite bedroom and laundry room.
Upstairs, three additional bedrooms include a master suite boasting a private balcony overlooking the front courtyard and two custom closets with built-in storage, along with a newly redone bath equipped with dual vanities and a glass-encased shower.
Though not huge, the 6,500-square-foot lot has nicely landscaped grounds that include a garden, brick al fresco dining patio and grassy yard with plenty of room for a pool. Elsewhere on the property is a detached two-car garage with new drywall and recessed lighting that, per the listing, “offers many future possibilities.”
