It’s remarkably different from the Victorian-style structure Jessica Fletcher called home, but the real-life and longtime Los Angeles house of legendary actress Angela Lansbury is no less homey or charming. A Spanish-style hacienda originally built in 1962, the mostly single-level residence includes four bedrooms and four baths in a comfortable 3,700 square feet and sits in a particularly leafy pocket of the Brentwood hills, surrounded by mature trees.
Together with her husband Peter Shaw, the beloved “Murder, She Wrote” star purchased the property way back in 1985 for just $925,000. The house remained Lansbury’s main residence for nearly 40 years, long after Shaw’s 2003 death and until her own passing in October 2022. Now being sold on behalf of her family, which includes three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, the estate is offered at just under $4.5 million.
Gates and a high wall shields most of the house from the street, ensuring privacy and serenity. The structure itself is resolutely unpretentious, with glitz-free living spaces and terracotta tile floors throughout. A recurring theme is abundant natural light, which filters into every room through combos of skylights, clerestory windows or glassy French doors.
While decoratively dated, the well-maintained kitchen is utilitarian and open to a cozy breakfast nook set beside a fireplace. There’s also a master suite with a skylit bedroom and large bathroom. But it’s the nearly half-acre grounds that most impress; Lansbury, a keen gardener, created an English-style garden in the backyard and planted numerous specimen trees. A notably spacious patio also wraps around a dark-bottom swimming pool.
The property is surrounded by lavish estates, and some of Lansbury’s nearest neighbors included Alexandra Daddario, Jim Carrey and “Cruella” director Craig Gillespie.
Thinking about making this your home? Better hurry. Listing agents Mick Partridge of The Beverly Hills Estates and Maksym Khomin of Coldwell Banker are hosting an open house today, from 2-5pm, and the place is sure to be brimming with interest.
