A scenic ranch property in the rolling mountains above itty-bitty and semi-remote Oakley, Utah, about an hour’s drive east of Salt Lake City, that’s linked to Hollywood veteran Katherine Heigl and singer-songwriter Josh Kelley, has popped up for sale at a hair under $4 million. While the low-key couple and their kids spend lots of time there — especially during the recent coronavirus quarantines, a spokesperson for Heigl reveals the owner/occupant of the property as the “Grey’s Anatomy” star’s mother, Nancy Heigl. Kelley and Heigl, who were originally misidentified as the owners, conveniently live on a neighboring ranch estate.
Listings for the 15.5-acre spread held by John Oldean and Jason Oldean at Bald Eagle Realty show stone-faced and metal-roofed Rocky Mountain residence offers a total of four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in close to 5,300 square feet. A closer parse through marketing materials shows there are two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms in the main part of the house, while a semi-detached and fully self-contained two-story guesthouse contains another two bedrooms and two glamorously tiled bathrooms plus a second laundry room.
A quaint bridge picturesquely spans a small pond just outside the front door of the main house, while the interior showcases heavy wood beams along with hand-plastered walls and textured wood floorboards. In the combination living and dining room, a fancifully curlicued chandelier over the table serves as a sinuous counterweight to the a muscularly massive stone fireplace that dominates the lounge area where floor-to-ceiling windows frame an open view of the surrounding mountains.
The expensively equipped kitchen is decidedly and somewhat surprisingly contemporary with sleek, lustrously polished wood cabinets and a comprehensive array of top-of-the-line culinary accouterment. There’s a second sink in the walk-in pantry, and the huge island incorporates not just a glass breakfast bar and a slab of marble set into the wooden countertops — for baking, of course, but an integrated deep fryer. The adjoining informal dining space has the same mesmerizing views as the living room and spills out to a huge stone terrace with ven more sweeping views over the valley.
Enhanced by a cathedral ceiling, a tiled fireplace and French doors to a stone terrace, the homeowner’s retreat incorporates a walk-in closet lined with wardrobes that hide the messiness, as well as a decadent bathroom slathered in organic mossy-green and copper-colored stone. A wooden staircase beneath a humongous stained glass window, which depicts a couple of coyotes — or maybe they’re wolves — next to a body of water that could be a lake or the ocean, leads to a spacious and luxurious guest suite complete with private terrace and lavish bathroom.
Separated from the main house by a partly covered stone patio, the guesthouse has a cozy lounge area with fireplace and a retro-inspired kitchen. There are two bedrooms and two deluxe bathrooms upstairs, while a second-floor sitting room conveniently makes an interior link from the guesthouse to the second-floor guest wing of the main house.
Though it was on the market in 2018 and 2019 at $4.2 million, it seems that, for now at least, the Heigl-Kelleys plan to stay put in their larger neighboring ranch property, a 25-acre spread anchored by a nearly 7,800-square-foot stone manor house they custom built shortly after they acquired the property in 2007 for an unrecorded amount. The five-bedroom and seven-bath mountain retreat, a combination of Rocky Mountain rusticity and decidedly contemporary architectural details, includes a small pond, a spectacularly sited swimming pool and, of course, to-die-for views.
The couple may be staying put in Utah but they have recently put their pied-à-terre in the celeb-favored Los Feliz area of Los Angeles on the market at a tetch under $3 million. Tax records indicate the couple paid exactly $2 million for the single-story Spanish-inspired hacienda shortly before their December 2007 wedding, and marketing materials show the not-quite-2700-square-foot spread has four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a flat and grassy, tree-shaded yard with plenty of room to add a swimming pool.
